Oakley x Kiko Kostadinov: The Prototype as Runway Object

Kiko Kostadinov builds garments the way Oakley builds sunglasses: from function outward, with luxury located in construction rather than surface. The London designer reengineers the internal logic of a coat or a trouser until it behaves differently on the body; Oakley has spent fifty years treating a frame as an engineering problem before an aesthetic one. When the two met on the FW26 menswear runway in Paris on 27 June, it read as two engineering cultures recognising each other.

What separates this from Oakley's other recent work is that nothing is for sale. The Brain Dead partnership produces footwear and eyewear on a drop schedule; the Meta and Prada tie-up puts Oakley branding on AI smart glasses. Both are products. What walked Kostadinov's runway was a prototype with no release date, shown as design research. The rest of this piece is about how it was made.

Moonbase1 and the logic of the prototype

The frame came out of Moonbase1, Oakley's internal innovation lab, and is handcrafted in California in the brand's own facility.

That detail matters more than it sounds. Producing in-house, off the mass-manufacturing line, is what lets Oakley experiment with scale, structure and material at a level that tooled production would flatten out. A prototype is not a small production run. It is a frame built to test what a frame can be, and building it inside a controlled lab rather than a factory is what makes the questions worth asking.

The silhouette is wrapped — the continuous, face-hugging curve Oakley has pushed since the Eyeshade in the 1980s — and the surface carries diamond-scribe detailing drawn directly from the artworks behind Kostadinov's collection. Diamond-scribe is a cutting technique, not a printed motif. It works the material rather than decorating it, which is the distinction that separates this from a graphic applied to an existing frame. It was shown in five lens colorways, a range that reads as a designer testing a palette rather than settling one.

The lens is the real technology

A sunglass lives or dies on its lens, and this is where Oakley's engineering actually sits.

Oakley's Prizm system is the reference point. Rather than tinting a lens for darkness, Prizm is a spectral tuning system: dyes injected into the lens material itself, not coated on afterward, engineered to block specific wavelengths of light while letting others through. The result sharpens contrast and separates colours the eye would otherwise blur together. Oakley spent more than fifteen years developing it by studying how human vision reads light in natural conditions, which is the kind of timeline a fashion house never has and a performance brand treats as normal.

On the collaboration frames, that engineering is being pushed into new territory. Reporting on the prototype points to a fresh expression of Oakley's lens architecture under the PhysioMorphic name, though Oakley has not published the technical detail, so it is best read as a signal rather than a spec. The intent is clear enough: the lens is the site of the innovation, and the shape around it is built to serve it.

The Terraforma, doing the quieter work

The seven Terraforma iterations shown alongside the prototype are the more instructive half of the presentation, because they are closer to something you could actually wear.

The Terraforma is defined by a short lens profile and a flat base curve — a lens with far less wrap than Oakley's sport archetypes, which reads as flatter and more graphic on the face. Each iteration runs Prizm and plays solid material against translucent, building colour-blocked depth through contrast and refraction. The colour-blocking is the layer you notice. The base curve and lens geometry underneath are what keep it structurally an Oakley rather than a fashion pastiche of one.

This is the frame to watch. The Moonbase1 prototype generates images; an adapted production model like the Terraforma is what eventually reaches faces.

A design conversation, not a drop

This is the second chapter, which changes what it means.

In March, at the AW26 womenswear show, Oakley and the Kostadinov womenswear team led by Laura and Deanna Fanning presented experimental takes on the Ellipse alongside a 3D-printed prototype. That last detail is the throughline: additive manufacturing, in-house handcraft, spectral-tuned lenses. Across two shows in one season, the collaboration keeps returning to fabrication technique as the actual subject. It is a sustained design investigation, and Oakley is treating the runway as a laboratory rather than a launch.

The wrapped, sport-derived sunglass has spent several seasons moving from the track onto the runway, and the easy reading is fashion borrowing from sport. This collaboration suggests the interesting traffic runs the other way. A performance brand is using a fashion runway to show its research — its lab, its lens science, its cutting techniques — before any of it becomes product.

For anyone invested in frames, that is the shift worth tracking. Eyewear is being placed at the front of the design process and judged on how it is engineered, not how it finishes an outfit. The prototype you cannot buy today is a preview of the lens technology and construction you will be able to buy in a couple of years. It is worth watching what Moonbase1 lets out of the lab next.
