ELLE chats to Self-Portrait designer Han Chong about his latest venture.
If you have your ear to the proverbial fashion ground, then you’ll know that ‘Self-Portrait’ is the hottest, and most covetable, brand on the block.
The mastermind behind the business, Malaysian-born designer Han Chong, has teamed up with eyewear veterans Le Specs to create their new line ‘Self-Portrait x Le Specs’, a 15-piece collection of eyewear inspired by the Self-Portrait aesthetic.
The line features pastel frames, peachy tones and inky blues in its scope and encompasses the downtown and low-key vibe of the brand.
ELLE caught up with Han to talk sunnies, style and Self-Portrait.
What was the process behind deciding to do a collaboration with Le Specs and moving into the eyewear space?
Hamish [Tame, Creative Director of Le Specs] and I met through a mutual friend overseas. We both respected what the other was doing in their field and it came about quite organically. I have always loved sunglasses and wanted to try my hand at designing them.
What is the most important thing for you to keep in mind when deciding on not only wearability but functionality in glasses?
When looking for the perfect sunglasses, first make sure that you are buying from a reputable retailer that abides with the eyewear standards – this will be written on the swing tag. Secondly make sure they fit comfortably. Thirdly and mostly importantly, make sure they look good!
Who is ‘Self-Portrait x Le Specs’ girl? What is she wearing her glasses with?
She can be anyone, a mother, a student, a career woman… but she knows how to have fun with style. She could pair her glasses with her favourite wardrobe staples like a classic pair of jeans with a T-shirt or a Self-Portrait dress and interpret it in her own way.
What’s the next big step for Self-Portrait?
We are in the midst of designing our next bridal collection, and also designing for SS17 for our next NYFW presentation, slowly perfecting everything we do step by step.
The Self-Portrait x Le Specs collection will be available from Le Specs retailers and online from April 1st.
